When art gets hold of neuroscience

On the occasion of the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, which will take place in Chicago from 17th to 21st October 2015, DiscovHER presents its favourite female artists mixing Art with Neuroscience.

Chloé Shard, the first CAMbrain Neuroartist!

In July 2015, the Cambridge Neuroscience Society organised an artistic competition for “neuroartists” and an exhibition on the theme: “Untangling Mind and Brain”. For the exhibition, Chloé Shard, a PhD researcher in Molecular Neurobiology at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge (United Kingdom), painted self-portraits in her series of works inspired by genetics and molecular biology.


Francesca Farina recognised during the Art of Neuroscience competition 2015

For the 4th edition of the Art of Neuroscience competition, the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Dutch Institute for Neuroscience awarded prizes to six artists in image and video categories. This year, Francesca Farina, from Maynooth University (Ireland) was recognised for her work "Tribute to the Father of Modern Neuroscience"

Among the non-selected participants for this competition, we noted the presence of Joanna Szczurkowska and her photograph of a seahorse.

Pinar Yoldas @pinaryoldas: winner of the Brain Art Project 2012 in the Sculpture and Installation category

The About My Brain Institute in Sydney, has as its mission to democratise leadership and neuroscience. In 2012, the Brain Art Project competition recognised the artist Pinar Yoldas in the sculpture and installation category for her work in collaboration with the neuroscientist David Paulsen. Her installations plunge us into the heart of the limbic system.
