Stopping neuronal loss

Discover Florie Reynaud, 2015 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science Fellow and PhD student at CGPhiMC, Université Claude Bernard Lyon I.

The loss of neurons is a reality which starts from the moment of birth and which continues throughout our lives. In certain cases, this loss may lead to neurological diseases. To find solutions to this challenge to 21st-century public health, why not go right back to the beginning to better understand how the foetus generates neurons? “Studying the formation of the nervous system during the foetal period will provide precious information allowing us to better decrypt the functioning and organisation of the brain. My research will bring to light new therapeutic targets to help develop new treatments”, explains Florie Reynaud, PhD student at CGPhiMC, Université Claude Bernard Lyon I. This work offers vast potential in understanding and controlling how neurons are generated in adults and may perhaps, in the future, restore mobility to patients with spinal cord injuries, cure Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease, and better treat neurological disorders such as anorexia, schizophrenia and epilepsy…

The loss of neurons is a reality from birth onwards, lasting our whole lives. In some cases, this loss can lead to neurological conditions. In order to better solve this problem, we must go back to the source to study neuron generation in the foetus. My research will bring new therapeutic targets to light and thus enable new treatments to be developed.
