The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin (1969): how biology can redefine social structures

Ursula LeGuin demolishes social codes and gender by authoring characters who are mostly asexual, and whose genital organs appear in a cyclical manner. The eighth volume in the Hainish Cycle series, composed of fifteen short stories and novels, The Left Hand of Darkness immerses the reader in a society where family structures, relationships and politics are based on the singular biological traits of its inhabitants.

Female Man by Joanna Russ (1975): what would be the outcome if only women survived a mass extinction?

This book is among the classic works of science fiction with a feminist twist. In this futuristic universe, all men have died because of a mysterious illness. Only women have survived, and they have rebuilt civilisation. The novel follows the lives of four women, who the main character meets by time travel through the 1950's.

The scientific background of this writer has brought her immense recognition in the world of science fiction. She uses her experience as a biologist to create Alien type species with plausible biological characteristics.
