Healing spinal cord injuries

Thousands of people all over the world each year are victims of spinal cord injuries; but yet, at the current time, no effective treatment exists. One possible strategy might be to use neural stem cells to recreate neurons and treat the damage. However, the journey from the embryonic stem cell to the differentiated neuron is still far from being clear. It is essential to decipher these mechanisms in order to be able to propose a therapeutic strategy to patients suffering from disorders of the nervous system. It is with this aim that the Columbian researcher Angie Molina Delgado, Post Doctoral Researcher at the Centre de Biologie du Développement at the Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, is trying to monitor in real time stem cells in the embryonic spinal cord, in order to quantify and model the behaviour of these cells during their proliferation and differentiation. “What I love about my work is the satisfaction of making my contribution by seeking to improve the quality of life and the health of patients via the discovery of new therapeutic strategies that are more effective and less aggressive than those that currently exist”, says the young researcher.

My Research interest fall under two main issues: we can use neural stem cells to help people recover from spinal cord accidents. But we can also help them recover from some cancer stem cells, which have become resistant to chemotherapy. Some of them have shown that if we are able to differentiate them, they can become sensitive to treatment again.
