February 11th / International Day of Women and Girls in Science

There is still a lot of progress to be made to ensure that parity is a reality in the sciences. Only 30% of researchers worldwide are women and there are still many hindrances and obstacles stopping young women pursuing a scientific career. This is why, in 2015, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to make 11th February the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Throughout this day, #DiscovHER reviews the L'Oréal and UNESCO commitment to women and girls in science over the past 18 years, through images.

Through the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science programme, L’Oréal Foundation recognises exceptional women scientists all over the world, gives grants to brilliant young female scientists and encourages vocations in teenage girls.

Over 18 years, more than 2,500 grants have been awarded to PhD students and post-doctorate researchers in 112 countries to support the young female researchers of the future

The award recipients are convinced of the importance of the programme for their scientific careers

92 women have been recognised for their incredible contribution to scientific progress. They are a source of inspiration for all young female researchers and send out a message of tenacity and perseverance

These prize-winners inspire their countries, as did Professor Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, who became president of Mauritius in 2009

They are also strong and inspiring figures for those around them and for their communities, like Marica Roye, L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science 2001 Laureate

Excellence and passion are at the heart of the jury’s selection criteria, and this certainly was the case for the 2015 programme Awards
