Émilie Tisserond, “Getting closer to the electronics of the future”

Fellow 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science, Émilie Tisserond is interested in an organic material with surprising properties: it makes ultra-fast electronics.

 In our hyper-connected society, driven by the speed of global-level changes, the improvement and optimization of electronic tools know no boundaries; they represent one of today’s key challenges. 

The study of new materials with exotic, original properties with the potential to make these electronics more effective, is currently attracting a lot of new research. 


Émilie Tisserond, a doctoral student at the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides of the Université Paris- Sud XI/Paris-Saclay, is one of the researchers who has been inspired. She is particularly interested in an organic material with surprising properties: a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3.

The structure of this material changes under the influence of very strong pressures and “it behaves like a stack of layers of graphene stripped of any impurities”, the young researcher explains. “The electrons move in these parallel planes, all at the same speed, very rapidly and without dispersing, similarly to particles of light”, she continues. 

By gaining a fundamental understanding of the properties and processes at play in this new physics, both through experience and theoretical analysis, we can control them, and in the future, develop new applications in the field of ultra-fast electronics. 


Émilie Tisserond is passionate about passing on scientific knowledge and alongside her research, teaches medicine and fundamental physics students.
