Eloïse Pariset, "Zooming in on communication between cancer cells"

Fellow 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science, Eloïse Pariset is interested in the properties of vesicles linked to the cancerous state

All of our cells communicate with each other constantly in order to regulate our bodies. In particular, they exchange information in the form of proteins and genetic material encapsulated in nanometric transporters known as extracellular vesicles. Cancer cells secrete more vesicles. The biological material transported by these vesicles supports the spread of tumors.

As vesicles are found in large quantities in all bodily fluids (blood, urine, saliva, etc…), they are easy to remove. This makes them a very interesting avenue to explore in terms of diagnostic applications.

Eloïse Pariset, a PhD student at the BioChip and BioPackaging laboratory of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, is carrying out research into whether the structural and mechanical properties of these small vesicles (mass, size, density and deformability) are also linked to the cancerous state of the transmitter cell. “One of the challenges of this approach is to successfully isolate the vesicles without damaging them. We therefore developed a miniature device for extracting and analyzing them", explains the young researcher from Alsace.

In order to sort the vesicles, she uses an innovative technique which has been tailored to their sizes. She is then able to analyze their structure using microelectromechanical sensors. The scientist is aiming to link these two steps in one ’combined’ device, which is about to be patented. Her goal is to obtain a faster, more reliable, simple, portable cancer diagnostic system, to provide even earlier, even better treatment.
