Caroline Dissaux, “Computer science committed to help reconstructive surgery”

Fellow 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science, Caroline Dissaux aims to find a surgery solution to the "cleft palate" problem

Oral clefts lip, also called « cleft palate » touches in Europe, 1 in 1000 births, it means more than 800 children each year1.After a plastic and maxillofacial surgery course to specialize in the treatment of facial malformations of the child,

Caroline Dissaux is now completing a PhD in order to pursue a career in university hospital. Her motive : the need to understand and find solutions. "Having always wanted to become a surgeon, my passion for facial malformations surgery appeared during my training, with these children whose strength and determination are an example."

Caroline Dissaux is currently conducting a research project at the ICUBE laboratory at the University of Strasbourg. The goal of the young doctor is to develop a mathematical biomechanical model to simulate and optimize the reconstruction of the alveolar bone, which surrounds and maintains the teeth, for children with cleft lip and palate.

The results of her work would make it possible to develop optimized surgical procedures without losing any chance for these children.

For Caroline, to hear a child say "now I am the king of the school" is the most beautiful motivation for doing his work.
