Breaking the glass ceiling in science

July 14th was a great day for women in science: The European Commission’s women’s rights committee adopted a report which sets out how women could be helped to overcome the barriers preventing them from progressing in science, research and technology. DiscovHER applauds this decision!

Women might make up half the population, but they represent only 33% of European researchers, 20% of university professors and 15.5 % of heads of institutions in the higher education sector. The draft report, by Elissavet Vozemberg (EPP), proposes several initiatives to be taken by the European Commission and the Member States in order to tackle the situation. As Ms Vozemberg’s stated:

My report focused on further positive actions in order to challenge the glass ceiling barrier, highlighting the importance of ensuring absolute fairness in the hiring process, eliminating stereotypes or prejudices concerning the female gender and tackling women being underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math careers.

Some of the actions pushed forward by the report are: improving network opportunities for female scientists in Europe, putting in place campaigns encouraging women to pursue scientific careers, asking for programmes to actively encourage women to continue their careers after maternity leave, and making the creation of gender equality plans a precondition for access to public funding in research.
