Audrey Courboulin, PhD "Pulmonary hypertension: it’s all about the nose"

Fellow 2016 L'Oréal-Unesco For Women In Science, Audrey Courboulin is working on pulmonary hypertension. Let's discover her portrait.

Pulmonary hypertension is a serious illness, predominantly found in females, which leads to heart failure and 40% of patients die in the 5 years following diagnosis. Finding new therapeutic treatments is a real public health challenge. Faced with this urgency, Audrey Courboulin decided to explore an original path. This post-doctoral researcher at the Inserm unit UMR _S 999 at the Université Paris-Sud / Paris Saclay, took as her starting point that it is possible to screen for pulmonary hypertension using an artificial electronic nose. This electronic nose detects volatile compounds in the patients’ breath, compounds that could interact with olfactory receptors expressed in the pulmonary vascular cells. “The hypothesis of my research project is that these receptors could be involved in the development of pulmonary hypertension, like they are in some cancers. These two pathologies present common mechanisms. If we can prove this, a completely new pathophysiology for this illness will have been shown, which might have an important impact for patients”, says Audrey Courboulin. Very motivated by these medical applications for this serious, incurable disease, the researcher will complete her scientific training by studying medicine, with the aim of becoming a respiratory specialist. This dual role will further increase her expertise.
