American Prizes and Grants for Women Scientists

Scientific careers are among the most difficult to lead. Finding financial support for research is an obstacle that is hard to overcome as a scientist and even more so for women. Today, DiscovHER has compiled a list of prizes awarded specifically to women to encourage them pursue their research.

FASEB Excellence in Science Award

Since 1989, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology has recognised women for notable contributions to the advancement of research in the area of biological science. Since 2012, five scientists of world renown have received grants. In 2016, Bonnie L. Bassler won the $10,000 award. The only negative point: to be eligible, you must be a member of one of the American Societies for Biology.

WICB Junior and Senior Awards

The Women In Cell Biology Committee nominates women for their scientific contribution to cellular biology. This prize is original because it identifies 3 main stages in the female researcher’s career. The WICB Junior Award for Excellence in Research, is awarded up to the 7th year after completion of the researcher’s thesis. The Senior prize, the Sandra K. Masur Senior Leadership Award is awarded to men or women in recognition of their scientific work and also to recognise the quality of their mentoring activities. Finally, the WICB Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Research, has been awarded since 2013 to female scientists who have been working independently for at least 7 years and less than 15 years.

Astronomy, Space, Atmospheric Sciences

Annie Jump Cannon Award in Astronomy

Each year, this prize recognises a female American astronaut for her remarkable contribution to astronomy. Scientists who received their doctorate 5 years previously are eligible. In 2015, Smadar Naoz  received the Cannon Award during the 227th Congress of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in front of more than 2,300 astronauts, journalists and scientists from all over the world.

Peter B. Wagner Memorial Award for Women in Atmospheric Sciences

The Peter B. Wagner Memorial Award for Women in Atmospheric Sciences, created in 1998, recognises students from American universities for their publications in the area of atmospheric science each year. The prize is worth $1,500.

Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences

This award, given by the American Chemistry Society and supported by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, is given to any individual, organisation or company who has actively contributed to developing the interest of women in careers in the chemical sciences.

Sharon A. Keillor Award for Women in Engineering Education

The Sharon A. Keillor Award for Women in Engineering Education, is one of 12 prizes awarded by the American Society For Engineering Education to organisations and individuals who work to develop an interest in engineering science in young female students.

This prize awards $2,000 to teachers in engineering sciences who are renowned for the quality of their pedagogical support and teaching methods. To find out more about nominations.

The Krieger-Nelson prize

This Prize, named after two great Canadian female mathematicians, recognises female mathematicians who have shown excellence through their contribution to mathematical research. Since its creation in 1995, the prize given is a piece of art and it has been awarded to 20 female mathematicians.
