3D imaging to save the injured

After a natural catastrophe or accident, a race against time begins to find survivors. In this quest, signals emitted by mobile telephones can be used to rapidly locate injured people, using directions and the arrival time of signals emitted by the phone. You must be able to find your position, knowing both the environment and the laws of signal propagation. “The aim of my project is to develop an innovative 3D imaging system, which has higher performance in terms of precision, reliability, size and speed of image acquisition, in order to obtain a 3D map of the damaged environment and improve the location and rescue of injured or trapped people”, explains Isabelle Kyoko Vin, currently a doctorate researcher at ONERA in Toulouse, who worked as a technician before going back to her studies to do research. This system will be able to be used in various other applications such as guidance, navigation, assisting plane landing and detecting objects. 

If tomorrow there was an earthquake, what would we do? I am working on developing a 3-D laser imager that is mobile and easy to transport, that can easily be loaded on a vehicle, and that is preferably airborne, in order to get a better field of view. It needs to be deployable quickly into the field, in order to rapidly transmit clear and precise maps to the emergency teams.
