Shape memory polymers enter vehicles!

Aeronautics, the aerospace sector, land transport… many industrial sectors are on a relentless quest for the ideal material. The challenge: finding a very light material that limits energy costs and that is capable of absorbing vibrations, while still having high rigidity. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques, and now doing her doctorate at the Institut FEMTO-ST, Pauline Butaud has taken on this challenge, by working with shape memory polymers that have surprising capacities: at ambient temperatures the material does not easily absorb vibrations; however “when the system is heated to a temperature approaching glass transition, the absorption rate is so high that no resonance is observed in the frequency range of interest”, she explains. “My research aims to improve the dynamic behaviour of structures. The goal is to control vibrations so as to increase the useful life of components, to control the vehicle’s stability and to improve acoustic comfort.” Pauline Butaud goes even further: her project claims to be ecologically compatible as it uses materials and processes with a low environmental cost as much as possible. Thanks to these polymers with exceptional absorption rates that, up to now, have not been researched very much, the safety of our car interiors may be considerably improved in the future.


I am working on intelligent materials: shape memory polymers. The challenge is this: to obtain a very light material in order to limit energy costs, but which is capable of absorbing vibrations, while having high rigidity. My research aims to improve the dynamic behaviour of structures. The objective is to control vibrations in order to prolong the life of components, improve the stability of vehicles and improve acoustic comfort.
