Nataliya Kosmyna, PhD "Neuronal interface, the power of thought"

Fellow 2016 L'Oréal-Unesco For Women In Science, Nataliya Kosmyna is working on developing Brain-Computer Interfaces.

If people with motor disabilities, who are incapable of moving or leaving their beds (such as those suffering with locked-in syndrome) could control their environment mentally to switch the light on at home, make the bed, etc., they could be more autonomous and have a better quality of life. The Ukranian researcher Nataliya Kosmyna, carrying out her PhD at the Inria de Rennes, is working on this possibility by developing Brain-Computer Interfaces. These interfaces would allow someone direct and voluntary control of a computer system via the interpretation of brain activity. “Thanks to a non-intrusive neuronal helmet, the system will recognise pictured actions (movement, image, concept). However, patients will need training, without which the neuronal signals might be misinterpreted”, says Nataliya Kosmyna. To improve recognition, the young researcher is defining a classification system as part of her thesis, which can be used via an interactive, dynamic learning system, as well as an intuitive and simple visualisation interface. Work has already started on communication about the project with various public demonstrations over all of France.
