Muriel Tyrman, "New magnets for truly eco-friendly cars"

Fellow 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science, Muriel Tyrman wants to provide to manufacturers of electrical vehicles a new type of magnet that is more eco-friendly and accessible.

Electric vehicles were designed to tackle some of the environmental challenges that we face. Paradoxically, these cars require the use of magnets made from rare earths; mineral substances with exceptional properties which are used in particular in the production of electric engines and which are extracted and refined through highly polluting processes.


Muriel Tyrman is a postdoctoral student at the SATIE Lab of the ENS Paris-Saclay who is passionate about cars, and one of her objectives is to find a way for manufacturers of electrical vehicles to move away from rare earth magnets by developing a new type of magnet made of two easily accessible and more eco-friendly metals: manganese and aluminum.

To this end, the young researcher is focusing her work on increasing the magnetic behavior of these materials: “I have increased the resistance of manganese-aluminum alloys to demagnetization by a magnetic field by 40%."


The promising results of her original, pioneering work will allow these new magnets to be used in the manufacture of engines for electric cars, and thereby help France to maintain its technological advantage in low-carbon vehicles.
