Unlocking the mysteries of Parkinson’s disease

With increased awareness in the media by the boxer Muhammad Ali, who suffers from the condition, Parkinson’s disease is feared, as are all neuro-degenerative diseases. Fascinated by the functioning and malfunctioning of the brain, Maude Beaudoin-Gobert, doctoral researcher at the Université Claude Bernard in Lyon, is trying to unlock the secret of the processes inherent to this disease and explain the side effects of current treatments that appear after several years of medical care. Maude Beaudoin-Gobert believes that her research will contribute to the discovery of new therapeutic methods. “Repairing the brain appears to be a dream within reach, with innovative techniques such as stem cell transplants or genetic reprogramming. I am so looking forward to participating in this revolution for the sake of the patients”, the young researcher told us.

My work is to investigate the mechanisms of the side effects. Side effects like involuntary movements - you want to drink a coffee you’re not able to, compulsive shouting, hallucinations. Side effects are very difficult to live with. So patients end up having to stop their work, they end up staying at home.
What about being a woman in science ? Five of the seven teams in my lab are led by women. so in my job being a woman has had no impact. But I’ve had other people, not scientists say to me ‘why are you doing a pH.D? Because you don’t need a pH.D to be a mum.’ Or ‘why are you studying? You don’t need to study to stay at home.’ That’s always awkward but I prefer to laugh.
