Laure Ciesla, PhD, “The ’decadence’ of galaxies”

Fellow 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science, Laure Ciesla wish to solve the mysteries of galaxies from their birth until their death.

What makes the stars light up? Why are they different colors? 

These are some of the questions that first ignited Laure Ciesla’s passion for astrophysics from early childhood. 


She has focused her studies and research on understanding this field ever since. Especially on understanding the evolution of galaxies from their birth until their death, that is the exact point in time when they stop producing stars. “I was fortunate enough to start my thesis at a key time in extragalactic astrophysics: the launch of the Herschel infrared space telescope”. It was a real springboard for this postdoctoral student, who was preparing her thesis. 


It meant that Laure Ciesla was able to collect a multitude of data that she is now using in her second post-doctoral research in the Astrophysics Department of CEA Saclay. The young scientist, who also has a young daughter, is aiming to develop a method that will make it possible to identify galaxies while the processes which prevent new stars from being formed are active. 


To this end, Laure Ciesla is studying the indicator of recent stellar activity: the light emitted by a galaxy, across its entire spectrum. “This will allow me to present a clear picture of the mechanisms that bring about the death of galaxies”. Another piece in the puzzle that is the creation of the Universe, Earth and mankind.
