Emilie Maurice, PhD "Back to the Big Bang"

Fellow 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science, Emilie Maurice wants to improve the knowledge of quark plasma in order to increase our understandings.

A few micro-seconds after the Big Bang, the universe consisted of a plasma of quarks: elements of observable matter, evolving freely in an environment with an extreme temperature of around a thousand billion degrees. 

As the universe expanded, and with the temperature falling, these quarks came together in nucleons (protons or neutrons). Together, these nucleons form the nucleus of an atom. 


Émilie Maurice is a post-doctoral student at the Laboratoire Leprince Ringuet of the École Polytechnique, where she studies quarks in a state in which they evolve freely, as they did at the time of the Big Bang. 

The young researcher does this using high-energy heavy-nuclei collisions carried out in the large hadron collider (LHC), the largest and most powerful particle accelerator in the world. “This enables us to recreate drops of this state of matter and so explore the first moments of the Universe”.

 

She likes to constantly push the boundaries and wants to improve knowledge of quark plasma in order to increase our understanding of the origins of the Universe. All whilst she is preparing for her first trail run!
