Audrey Hasson, PhD, "Climate change: all about salt?"

Changes in the climate over the last decades translate, in the long term, into events that will become more and more extreme: increased draughts in arid areas and floods in humid areas. The worldwide population must face this climate change head on, as well as short-term variations such as the El Niño phenomenon which takes place every 3 to 10 years in the Pacific Ocean. The ocean is at the core of climate balance. It is both a key player and an indicator of variations and changes to the climate. 


Currently carrying out post-doctorate research in the Oceanography and Climate Laboratory - Digital Experimentation and Approaches at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, Audrey Hasson is focusing her work on the saltiness of water. “Measuring the quantity of salt dissolved on the surface of oceans gives us information on the balance between the hydrological cycle (evaporation and precipitation) and the dynamics of oceans (sea currents)”, says Audrey Hasson. Faced with the difficulty of measuring saltiness on a global scale, Audrey Hasson collaborates with the French space agency (CNES) and NASA to interpret salt observations made by satellite and better understand their link with the variations in the hydrological cycle. This is key research which will allow humans to better face changes to our climate.
