Annalaura Stingo, "Mathematics comes to the aid of physics"

Fellow 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science, Annalaura Stingo wants to adapt new mathematical methods to help in the physics field.

A wave is the propagation of a disturbance which produces in its path a reversible variation of the local physical properties of the site, like the ripples caused by a stone falling into water. 

It moves at a specific speed which depends on the characteristics of the diffusion site.

The study of the propagation of elastic, electromagnetic waves or electric signals has applications in research and development of new materials in particular. Their exploration is based on mathematical modeling of the propagation of these waves. 


This is the subject of Annalaura Stingo’s thesis. Ms Stingo is a PhD student at the LAGA Laboratory of the Université Paris 13 and the Institut Galilée, and comes from Afragola, near Naples. 

The young researcher uses mathematics to model the movements and behaviors of quantum scale particles. “Currently I’m interested in modeling the non-linear interaction between a non-solid field, a wave and a solid field, like quark, an elementary particle that makes up observable matter, and in studying the evolution of this interaction starting from a disturbance of the system’s initial resting state”. 


Annalaura Stingo is therefore working on the Klein-Gordon equation with particles of matter and particles of “radiation”. Her goal is to adapt new mathematical methods to better understand the physical reality that they model.
